History

From being home to the Trial of the Century to having a tavern where George Washington stopped for food, drink and lodging on his journey, Hunterdon County is rich in history.

The house, also known as Flemington Castle, where the man for whom Flemington was named lived with his family. Built in 1756, it is known as the oldest surviving home in the borough.

The historic courthouse in Flemington once served as the setting for the trial of Bruno Hauptmann for the kidnapping and murder of Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr. Today, the Courthouse is the site of an annual re-enactment that allows spectators to take part in the trial and site on the benches of the original jury.

A venue for international, national, local and emerging artists located in an 1836 grist mill that is on the National Historic Register. The Hunterdon Art Museum is a center for contemporary art, craft and design featuring 15 exhibitions, and more than 200 classes and workshops annually.

The Red Mill Museum Village is a regional history museum devoted to preserving and educating the public about The Red Mill, the Mulligan Quarry and the industrial, agricultural and social history of Clinton and Hunterdon County. Situated on 10 acres along the South Branch of the Raritan River, the museum features a variety of exhibitions and programs throughout the year.
